This gadget works very nicely for geotagging photos. You just turn it on before you leave, and it automatically logs the GPS coordinates of your route in a 5-second resolution (can be configured for 1-second resolution from a PC).

There are two main uses for this device. You can synchronize the GPS coordinates with your photos, as long as your camera's clock is accurately set up. The Qstarz doesn't require clock adjustments, because it grabs the time from the GPS satellites. I'm using HoudahGPS on my Mac to download the coordinates in a GPX file, and the GPSPhotoLinker program to automatically synchronize that with my photos. All I have to set up is the timezone (GMT+x hours), with the daylight saving time accounted to it. So for example most of Europe is GMT+1 during the winter, and GMT+2 during the summer.

In addition to geotagging photos, I can plot the exact route on Google Earth and other applications. The Windows-only program that comes with the device can track your average and maximum speed, the distance, and calculate the number of calories you burned while running, cycling, etc. The Qstarz can also be used as a GPS receiver attached to your computer, but I've never tried that. The device can be connected to the PC or Mac via a short USB cable (supplied) or wirelessly (bluetooth). Fortunately the USB cable is standard, and I can use it to connect my camera to my computer as well, and you could use the camera's cable to connect the Qstarz as well.

I've extensively used this device during my European vacation. I was able to tag all my photos automatically and accurately. By tagging I mean not only the GPS coordinates, but the name of the city/county/country as well.

The Qstarz acquires GPS signal in less than a minute, and maintains that connection for the entire day. The only time I lost signal was when I went underground, inside the thick walls and ceiling of a medieval castle, or inside a cavern. Within a minute after coming out it automatically reacquired connection. While there's no GPS signal the device automatically stops logging and restarts it as it gets signal.

I recommend that you don't turn off the device during a trip, because if you forget about turning it on, you won't have the data. The BT-Q1300S is capable of running for the entire day (from sunset to sunrise easily). I don't exactly know it limits, though.

The disadvantages are relatively minor to me:
* There's no overcharge protection. You shouldn't leave this connected to your computer for a long time, because you damage the unreplaceable batteries. This is ridiculous, how hard would it have been to add overcharge protection?
* There's only one button. You press that for 4 seconds to turn it on/off, 2 seconds to turn logging on/off, and tap it to log a single entry right now.
* The LEDs that indicate various statuses are extremely hard to see outdoors (almost impossible, unless I shade it with my hands). You also have to memorize their meaning, because it's far from obvious.
* There's no LCD screen, but honestly I never even look at it during my trip.
* The software that comes with it is for Windows only, and if you want to reprogram it to 1-second logging, you must do it from Windows, as far as I know. However, I can do everything else on my Mac using free applications.

The reason I did not subtract 1 star for these issues is because the device just works. I press the button for 4 seconds before I leave in the morning, and can leave it alone all day, knowing it does the job. But you must be careful not to leave it connected to the USB overnight.

I JUST PURCHASED THE DNX7140 AND HAD IT INSTALLED IN A CHEVROLET 2500HD SILVERADO. THE SILVERADO HAD THE BOSE SOUND SYSTEM WITH ALL STEERING WHEEL CONTROLS, XM RADIO, AND ON-STAR. SINCE I WANTED ALL OF THESE ITEMS TO WORK AFTER THE INSTALLATION, I HAD THE GEEK SQUAD AT BEST BUY INSTALL THE UNIT. AFTER THE INSTALLATION, ALL PREVIOUS FUNCTIONS WORK VERY WELL.

THE NAVAGATION UNIT IS TREMENDOUS. I HAVE PREVIOUSLY HAD VARIOUS GARMIN PORTABLE NAV UNITS SO I WAS FAMILIAR WITH THE NAVIGATION PART OF THE DNX7140. THE NAVIGATION IS QUICK AND ACCURATE AND THE DISPLAY IS "SECOND TO NONE".

THE SOUND QUALITY IS FANTASTIC. THE CD'S SOUND GREAT. THE PICTURE AND SOUND QUALITY OF THE DVD ARE LIKE THE 5.1 SURROUND SOUND OF MY BOSE UNIT AT HOME. I HAVE A DROID CELL PHONE INTO WHICH I HAVE DOWNLOADED NUMEROUS MP3 SONGS. AFTER CONNECTING THE BLUETOOTH ON MY PHONE TO THE UNIT, I CAN LISTEN TO ALL THE MP3 SONGS ON THE DROID THROUGH THE SOUND SYSTEM. THERE IS NO LOSS OF SOUND QUALITY PLAYING THROUGH THE SYSTEM. IT ONLY TOOK ABOUT A MINUTE TO SYNCH THE BLUETOOTH WITH THE PHONE AND THE KENWOOD.

BASICALLY, THE UNIT IS QUITE EASY TO PROGRAM TO YOUR INDIVIDUAL PREFERENCES. ALTHOUGH THE SPECIFIC CONTROLS ON THE UNIT ARE RELATIVELY SMALL, I DO NOT HAVE ANY PROBLEMS WITH VOLUME OR FUNCTION CONTROL SINCE ALL THE STEERING WHEEL CONTROLS ARE FUNCTIONAL. WITHOUT THE STEERING WHEEL CONTROLS, THE BUTTONS ON THE UNIT ARE A LITTLE SMALL.

NEGATIVES: 1) THE UNIT WORKS GREAT; HOWEVER, KENWOOD HAS NOT LOADED THE MOST RECENT FIRMWARE INTO THE UNIT. FOR THE UNIT TO WORK ABSOLUTELY CORRECT, YOU MUST GO TO THE KENWOOD SITE AND DOWNLOAD AN UPDATE FOR THE FIRMWARE. YOU THEN BURN A CD WITH THIS INFORMATION AND UPGRADE THE FIRMWARE IN THE UNIT. ADDITIONALLY, THE GARMIN SOFTWARE THAT IS LOADED IN THE UNIT MUST ALSO BE UPDATED TO A MORE RECENT RELEASE. HERE AGAIN, YOU MUST DOWNLOAD THE SOFTWARE, BURN IT TO A CD AND INSTALL IT IN THE UNIT. YOU CAN FIND THE FIRMWARE UPDATE AND THE GARMIN UPDATE AT THE KENWOOD WEBSITE AT [...] 2) THE UNIT COMES WITH A REMOTE CONTROL; HOWEVER, I HAVE NOT FOUND THE REMOTE TO BE VERY HELPFUL.

I ONLY HAVE ONE REGRET - I WISH I HAD PURCHASED THE UNIT SOONER.

GPS Review - TomTom ONE XL Widescreen Bluetooth GPS Navigator

Image : http://www.flickr.com

I've just had the chance to place my excited little hands around the new TomTom One XL. Previously a Garmin GPS fan I was determined to keep an open mind about whether the new TomTom One XL could live up to the hype. Well my GPS friends you will not be disappointed.

As you know previously I have only full endorsed two GPS's and they were the Garmin 350 & 660. Well now we have another winner to add to the list - the TomTom One XL.

This little beauty is equipped with a 4.3 inch screen and weighs in at 7.4 ounces. Apparently it is an upgraded version of the TomTom One 3.5 inch but since I haven't seen the former I can't say how alike they are.

The pixel definition is superb. All the map info is now stored on a tiny flash-drive inside the unit which makes for updating maps very easy.

Overall the reason that the TomTom has impressed me so much is that the screen clarity, auto zoom and screen refresh rate is flawless.

Now with all this excitement you would think that I'm about to propose marriage, but alas it is my duty to give you both the good and the bad on this little navigator and there are few areas where the function lets you down.

Most notably is that you are unable to see the names of the roads that are upcoming on your map until you are practically already on them. If you completely trust the system or are familiar with the roads in the area then that won't be a problem but if you are like me and need to know a few streets in advance what street name that you'll be turning at then that can be frustrating.

If you are a control freak like me then that one flaw might cause a bit of annoyance but overall I think the TomTom One XL is a winner.

GPS-Review - TomTom ONE XL Widescreen Bluetooth GPS Navigator

Image : http://www.flickr.com
