Portable GPS Systems - How to Choose the Best

Portable GPS systems have come a long way in recent years. Today, you can have a GPS system that you can take with you everywhere you go. No longer is the GPS only mounted to the dash of your car. Now you can hold a portable GPS navigation system in your hand as you travel just about anywhere. However, these units represent a sizeable investment, anywhere between $200 and $1,500. Before you put down the money for one of these systems, do a little research to make sure that you are getting the best possible system for the price.
First, the more affordable the GPS unit is, the smaller the memory capacity will be. Some of the cheapest units will need to have maps loaded on to them via memory cards. On the other hand, the pricier units will have maps already loaded into their built-in memory systems. If you want a portable GPS navigation system that has pre-loaded maps, be prepared to pay more than $500.
Another consideration to make when purchasing portable GPS systems is the size of the screen. You can find screen sizes in a range between 2.1 inches and 7 inches. The size of screen that you need depends on what the intended use of the portable global positioning system is going to be. If you wish to have a unit that doubles as a portable car GPS system, then you will need a larger screen. However, if you simply need to have a system that you can take with you anywhere and not use in the car, a smaller screen will work. If you are looking for something that falls in the middle of the screen size range, consider the RoadMate 6000t portable GPS system. This system has a 3.5 inch screen with anti-glare properties, which works well as a handheld device and a car mounted device, making it an ideal portable automotive navigation system. The Pharos GPS 135 portable GPS system is another that has a 3.5 inch screen. The Garmin StreetPilot 2720 portable color GPS navigation system is a slightly larger option with a 3.8-inch screen. If you need the largest possible screen, consider the Garmin StreetPilot 7200 model, which has a 7-inch screen.
Another consideration to make when shopping for portable global positioning systems is the menu on the system. Make sure that the menu is as user friendly as possible, particularly if you intend to use the unit while driving. You may compare the best portable global positioning systems and find that one has a menu screen that is difficult for you to use.
Once you have decided on a couple of units in mind that you think will be good for your needs, visit a GPS store near you to actually handle the units. While the best portable global positioning system discounts are going to be found online, handling the unit at a store will help you solidify your decision. Even with the best portable GPS navigation system bargains, if you are not happy with the unit, the savings you got on the price will be worthless. Remember, portable GPS systems represent a sizeable monetary investment, so make sure you like the unit you have chosen and are comfortable using it before you make the purchase.

Q: Can the SG5 give me the distance to the pin?
A: The SkyCaddie, using the IntelliGreen graphics found on our professionally recorded SkyCourses, provides more information than just the distance to the pin. Once the line of play is selected on the graphical green outline, it provides the minimum carry to get on the green, the maximum limit you have to the back of the green, plus you can adjust to obtain the third distance of the approximate flag location. All three distances are provided simultaneously from any direction as you approach the green. You can then frame your shot in a much larger target area and select the best club. You will hit more greens and have shorter putts than a single number can provide.

I had an SG3 that served me well for 2 years, but I wanted to upgrade to the color SG5. I have been using it now for about 4 months and really can't say anything bad about it. Lately the foursome I have been playing with 3 of us have a GPS unit and 1 has a Laser System. I'm the only one with a SkyCaddie, the other 2 GPS units are different brands but are new color models in the 0 to 0 range, and both have the touch screen features. I won't name those brands,since I don't own them, and to be honest I'm glad I don't own them. What we started to notice is that about 75% of the time the 3 GPS units all had different yardage, anywhere from 3 yards to up to a max of 14 yards. The one constant was that my buddy with the laser always had the same yardage as me with my SG5. What was also interesting is that when we all used our 3 different GPS units to mark the distane of one of our shots, we all got the same distance for the shot, no variance. The other 2 GPS units don't charge a yearly fee for their course database, I do pay an annual fee of .95 for all the courses in CA. The other 2 guys started to do some investigating why their units seemed to be inaccurate at times. The conclusion that we all reached is that SkyCaddie is the only manufacture that actually has people out there walking the courses and recording the data based on where they are standing in relationship to the GPS readings they get. Seems the other companies base their measurements on ariel data and mapping programs. Here is a quote from one of those manufacturers in their FAQ section regarding how they collect their data: "The (product name) golf course data is collected from aerial and satellite imagery from various vendors. We then use that imagery to digitize the course feature. Once complete, course routing and scorecard information is assigned for each hole". Also if you read the fine print that free course data without a fee could someday have a fee, "At the current time, we are offering map updates to include new and updated courses at no charge. At some point in the future, it is possible that (company name)will begin to charge a nominal fee for course updates". Again they aren't saying you will defiantly be paying a fee someday, just that it is possible. Probably the lawyers had them throw that in just to cover their butts, so its probably not a concern. Last Saturday the other 2 guys both showed up with a new SG5 (bought on Amazon), their other units are now listed on Ebay. And we all have the same yardage now all the time. Our buddy with the laser gets his measurement to the pin and it takes in account the slope, nice if you can see the pin. Also my hands shake too much when using the laser. The SG5 won't improve your game if you don't have consistent distances nailed down with your clubs, but if you do you will see more balls on the green, not short or off the green.
One other thing is all these guys that complain about how the SG5 won't load up on their computer or freeze up and have too be returned. I don't pay attention to those reviews, some of these folks have messed up or old systems or aren't computer literate to follow directions. And yes calling SkyCaddie support is not a pleasant experience, if you do more talking then listening. I have found that if I email in my question support gives me a detailed and accurate answer within anywhere from 20 minutes to a couple hours.
My experience and that of my friends is that free course data may not be as accurate as the information from SkyCaddie, it's worth a year to get accuracy.

Automotive GPS Systems - Built In Or Portable?

Whether you are driving long hours across country or a few minutes across town, you might want to consider getting one of the latest automotive gps systems to save you time and for your safety. Being able to get from point A to point B without getting lost can sometimes is a challenge, but automotive gps systems can help in so many ways. The automotive gps systems use 24 orbiting satellites to triangulate your exact whereabouts and also figure out the distance it will be before you get to your destination. Along the way to 'point B' the automotive gps receivers will tell you roads you've passed and exit as well. This is so you don't have to look away from the road, making it much safer.
Automotive gps systems have the same features as many of the handheld portable gps receivers do, however, most of them are larger and stay in the car. But there are a few models that can be taken out of the car and carried around with you as you walk around the city or the woods; it depends on which model you want to purchase. Most of the automotive gps models have a larger LCD touchscreen and come with more maps than the handheld units. Street level maps and millions of POI's or points of interests such as restaurants, ATM's and banks, zoo's, schools and parks are already preprogrammed into the automotive gps systems. Although there are programs in which you can program your own POI's such as schools and speed cameras so you know to avoid them each time you pass by that way.
There are several software packages available to download onto your automotive gps navigational system through your home computer that will allow you to see more of the United States or Canada, Mexico and even Europe. If you are planning on traveling, it might be a good idea to purchase a CD-ROM with one of these extended countries with the POI's highlighted for you and your family to enjoy while there.
Some of the other accessories available for your automotive gps systems would be a Bluetooth headset for easy hands-free driving, XM radio - there might be a subscription cost to this, you would have to check and see - a carrying case if you want to take the system out and take it on a walking tour of the city or forest and different mounting options. One of the options for mounting the automotive gps is a round 'sticky' disk which you lay the gps navigation receiver on and it stays put as you drive along. Another option is an 'arm' mount which can be placed on the dash or adhered to the window so the gps is where it is most comfortable for you to view it while driving.

This complex device holder worked fine for a few months. One day I secured my iPod in the holder and the iPod fell out as I started driving. I put it back in a couple more times; when it quickly fell out each time, I realized that the holder was listing to one side. I tried adjusting it upward but it was already pointing all the way up. Then I noticed that one of the two air vent grippers was no longer gripping the vent. Upon inspection I found that the outer vent clip, along with its spring, had vanished. They're nowhere to be found in the car; I think it's likely that they're now inside the air duct. The clip piece must have broken since it would otherwise have stayed on the arm's track. The device holder is completely useless now.
UPDATE: I called the company. They said to go to their website and look toward the bottom of the main page for the link to order replacement bracket springs set for free. It's [...]. The link is in red and is fairly easy to find. Once I sent the email, they actually sent a replacement set via USPS - free! My guess is, I was far from the only one who had this problem. Clearly, the company stands behind their product and is committed to customer satisfaction and easily resolving problems, so I've upgraded my review from three to five stars.

This was my third magellan. I had two Roadmate units. They both died. They both had the annoying habit of overheating in summer and, consequently, getting slower and slower and slower and....then stopping entirely. And then they just stopped working altogether. So I wasn't holding out much hope for the maestro when it showed up. Same basic design and maps - some interface updates, but clearly the same unit reworked and repackaged. But: it wasn't. The overheating problem has been pretty much solved. It's done it once in the last 18 months, on a 100 degree day - can hardly complain about that. Given that, I think it's outstanding value. The maps are great (in the midwest - I took it to the west coast and it sucked somewhat), the reaction time is very fast, the route selection is usually pretty good (and better than Garmin's laughable choices), and it has the unique feature (I think) at this price point of allowing you to build routes in a separate folder: extremely useful if you're making deliveries or need to get around a selection of places (real estate agent, anyone?). The interface is easy to understand and, IMO, a lot faster to find places than any other brand given the way they've structured it: use the "zip, downwards" option for finding places. Warning times are usually good, and the directional instructions it uses suit me very well. Downsides: The manual on-off button stopped working after 6 months. The unit has had four little "incident" so far where it simply stops working and re-sets itself, losing all your stored data. (Gotta back up to SD card!) the maps will never be updated, and Magellan's customer service and support is truly awful. If you do have a problem then you may as well just buy another unit, because Magellan won't be any help.
On balance, and bearing in mind the price, I think it's a great "disposable" GPS that you should expect to last 18-36 months.
