GPS stands for Global Positioning System. It was originally developed for the defence purposes. Some models of Magellan are preloaded with street-level maps of the entire U.S. and Canada. Some of them operate in several languages and can be transferred between cars.
The TomTom's models come with maps of the major U.S. roadways along with a CD containing comprehensive street-level maps and points of interest for all the states which can be uploaded via a mini-USB port on the device. Other popular brands are Lowrance, Raymarine, Humminbird and Iridium
